Starting kickboxing and wondering what you actually need? This guide gives you a clear overview of all the essential kickboxing gear – from the starter kit to competition gear. No unnecessary filler, just what you actually need to know.
The starter kit: 4 things you must have
Before you start partner training and sparring, you need these four things:
- Kickboxing gloves – protect your hands and your training partner
- Shin guards – mandatory in most Norwegian clubs
- Mouthguard – the cheapest insurance you will ever buy
- Groin guard (for men) – non-negotiable safety
A complete starter kit typically costs between 1 500 and 3 000 kr, depending on brand and quality.
Gloves: how to choose the right ones

Gloves are the most important piece of gear you buy. There are two things you need to understand:
What does "oz" mean? Ounces (oz) measure the weight of the padding – not the size. More oz = more protection.
- 10–12 oz: Bag and pads – better "feel" and speed
- 14–16 oz: Sparring – extra padding that protects both partners
Training: choose 14 oz
As a beginner, we recommend 14 oz as a versatile choice that works for both bag work and sparring. You can choose from all the gloves in our range – from Venum and Ringhorns to TOP TEN. Always remember hand wraps under your gloves to stabilise your wrists and knuckles.
Two good starting recommendations:
A classic choice that is always in stock. Solid quality and a good fit for beginners.
A more affordable option made by TOP TEN. WAKO approved and a good first choice for those who want to save a little.
Competition: only 10 oz WAKO approved
If you are entering official competitions, separate rules apply: the gloves must be WAKO approved and 10 oz. This is not optional – gear that isn't approved will get you disqualified. Our best seller for competition:

TOP TEN WAKO-Approved Boxing Gloves – used by athletes at every level in Norway.

Shin guards and instep protection

Shin guards are mandatory in most Norwegian kickboxing clubs. They protect your shin when you block, and your training partner when you kick.
Two types:
- Sock type: Simple and light, but can slip. Suitable for technical training.
- With straps: Moulded padding with Velcro – the standard for sparring and competition.
Measure your shin from just below the knee to the top of the ankle to find the right size (S/M/L/XL). Our recommendation: TOP TEN WAKO Shin Guard with UV Mark – WAKO approved, with straps and instep protection.

Headguard and face protection

A headguard is for sparring. It doesn't prevent concussion, but it considerably reduces the risk of cuts and bruises. For beginners we recommend a model with cheek and chin protection for extra security. Most important: fit. A headguard that slides around gives a false sense of security and blocks your vision at critical moments.
Clothing and accessories

Kickboxing shorts are specially designed with high side splits for unrestricted freedom of movement for high kicks. Light, sweat-wicking and almost weightless during training.

Always have in your bag: water bottle, skipping rope, small towel and sports tape. Always air your gear after training – never leave sweaty gear in a closed bag.
WAKO-approved gear for competition

If you are going to compete in Norway, WAKO-approved gear is an absolute requirement. WAKO (World Association of Kickboxing Organizations) sets the standard for all official competitions – from local Norwegian Cups to international championships.
Checklist for your first competition:
- WAKO-approved headguard (red or blue)
- WAKO-approved 10 oz gloves (red or blue) – not 14 oz
- WAKO-approved foot and shin guards
- Mouthguard
- Groin guard (mandatory for men)
- Shorts or trousers suited to your discipline

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between boxing gloves and kickboxing gloves?
Kickboxing gloves have extra padding on the back of the hand and a more flexible cuff for blocking kicks. Boxing gloves are optimised for punches only, with a rounder shape and stiffer wrist support.
Can I use 14 oz gloves in competition?
No. Official WAKO competitions require 10 oz WAKO-approved gloves. 14 oz is recommended for training and sparring, but not permitted in competition.
Do children need special gear?
Yes. Adult gear doesn't give children the right protection. Look for gloves in 4–8 oz and shin guards in junior sizes.
How long do gloves and shin guards last?
With 2–3 sessions a week, good gear typically lasts 1–3 years. Check regularly for compressed padding, cracks in the material and Velcro that no longer holds.
Can I wash my gloves in the washing machine?
No – water and heat destroy the foam padding. Wipe with a damp cloth and air-dry after every session.
