In recent years Muay Thai has become one of the fastest-growing martial arts in Norway. More and more clubs offer structured training for children, young people and adults, and the level of Norwegian athletes is higher than ever. The right gear is essential for a safe and effective start – for training, sparring and competition alike.

In this guide we go through the gear you need, the difference between training gear and competition gear, and how Venum and IFMA-approved TOP TEN cover different needs.

Basic Muay Thai gear

Everyone starting Muay Thai needs a minimum of protection and training gear:

  • Boxing gloves (12–16 oz depending on body weight)
  • Shin guards
  • Muay Thai shorts
  • Mouthguard (for sparring)
  • Groin guard
  • Ankle support (recommended)

This is the gear used in almost every club, whether you are training technique, pads or light sparring.

Training gear vs. competition gear

Training gear is made for durability, comfort and versatile use. The padding is often thicker, and the gloves are used for the bag, pads and sparring alike.

Competition gear must follow the IFMA rules with the correct weight, dimensions and approval. This applies in particular to gloves (10 oz in a bout), shin guards and protective gear. Many people therefore choose to have one set for training and one set for fighting.

Venum – professional Muay Thai gear for training

Venum is one of the world's leading brands in Muay Thai and striking sports. The gear is developed for high performance and is used by professional athletes at international level.

  • Ergonomic fit for clinch and elbow work
  • Strong wrist support
  • Durable materials for daily use
  • Optimal balance between protection and mobility

IFMA and TOP TEN – approved competition gear

If you are going to fight in amateur Muay Thai under IFMA, approved gear is required. TOP TEN is an official sponsor of IFMA and supplies competition gear used at European and World Championships and international championships.

IFMA-approved TOP TEN gear ensures the correct weight and dimensions, approved padding and level of safety, and permission for use at official championships.

Venum Training Camp in Thailand – our annual training trip

Every year we organise a training camp at Venum Training Camp in Thailand in partnership with Skogn folkehøgskole (a Norwegian folk high school). We travel for three weeks in March/April with Norwegian athletes who want to experience authentic Muay Thai training.

  • Daily sessions with experienced Thai trainers
  • Focus on technique, clinch and fight preparation
  • Training in a professional environment
  • The chance to develop both physically and mentally

This is a unique opportunity for Norwegian athletes to train where the sport originated, with structured sessions and close follow-up.
