From January 2025, WAKO (World Association of Kickboxing Organizations) is introducing a new standard for competition equipment. All head guards, gloves, shin guards and other safety equipment must carry a visible WAKO-approved label. From 2026, the requirement will also apply to all clothing.
This raises an important question: Do national federations have to follow these requirements in full?
What WAKO requires internationally
WAKO's Equipment Book states clearly:
- Only WAKO-approved equipment may be used at World and Continental Championships, World Cups and all A, B and C class tournaments.
- The equipment must be approved by the WAKO Board and Technical Committee.
- The label is a guarantee that the product meets international safety and quality standards.
No national exemptions apply at international championships. All athletes must compete in WAKO-approved equipment.
Can national federations make exceptions nationally?
Yes – in 2025, some federations are choosing to allow older or non-approved equipment to be used at national events during a transition period. But this does not change the international rules: athletes heading to the European Championships, World Championships or World Cup must use WAKO-approved equipment regardless.
National exemptions can make the transition easier locally, but they do not provide an exemption from WAKO's requirements internationally.
Why it pays to invest early
Even though transition arrangements exist, there are many advantages to choosing WAKO-approved equipment right now:
- Safety: The equipment is tested and meets strict safety requirements.
- Continuity: You avoid having to change equipment when you step up to a higher level.
- Professionalism: You show commitment as an athlete from your very first training session.

TOP TEN – WAKO's most stable partner
TOP TEN has been a reliable WAKO partner since 1980. No other brand has held approval for as long. Other manufacturers come and go, which creates uncertainty for athletes and clubs. With TOP TEN, you get stability, quality and peace of mind.
Cheap or untested equipment may seem tempting, but it often fails to meet the requirements, has a short lifespan and can cause problems at competitions.
Combat Store – your trusted distributor
As main sponsor of Norges Kickboxingforbund (the Norwegian Kickboxing Federation) and official distributor of TOP TEN, Combat Store offers a wide range of WAKO-approved equipment. With us, you get quality that lasts – and products that are already ready for future requirements.
The answer is simple: Yes, national federations can create transition rules – but everyone must follow WAKO's requirements internationally. That is why the smartest move is to be prepared now.
