Om Muay Thai for Beginners
New to Muay Thai? Thai boxing uses fists, elbows, knees and shins, and the equipment reflects that. Here is what you need to get started at the club.
What you need first
- Gloves. Muay Thai gloves are slightly more open in the palm than pure boxing gloves, so you can grip in the clinch. 12–14 oz is common for adults.
- Muay Thai shorts. Short and wide, precisely so they allow free movement for high kicks. Ordinary training shorts will hold you back.
- Shin and instep guards. For when you start sparring. IFMA-approved models are required in competition.
- Namman Muay oil. Not required, but part of the ritual: the oil warms up the muscles before the session.
How to choose your size. Muay Thai shorts sit shorter and wider than ordinary training shorts, and often run a little small. We recommend choosing one size up from what you usually wear.
