The board for practitioners who have moved beyond the beginner stage and want to build more striking power, precision and control. 25 ft-lb without a pad gives a slim, traditional board with a direct feel of the strike. It is widely used for gradings, and in competition as a tie-break board. The board splits in two with a correct strike and slides back together.

Who is it for?

  • Intermediate practitioners who have mastered the padded boards
  • Practitioners preparing for a grading
  • Clubs training power and accuracy, and who need a tie-break board at events

How hard is it?

25 ft-lb without a pad is level 3 of 5 in the PNP series: twice the force of the 12.5 board, and half that of the white 50 board.

  • Choose this if the 25 board with blue pad breaks without problems, or you want a thinner board without cushioning.
  • If you are unsure, or the practitioner is a child: start with 12.5 or 25 with pad.
  • Move up to the white 50 ft-lb board when you are an advanced practitioner and the 25 board breaks consistently and with control.

With or without a pad?

This board has no pad. It is slimmer and gives a more traditional feel, and you can feel more clearly whether the strike landed. If you want the same resistance with cushioning for hand and foot, choose 25 ft-lb with blue pad.

How a reusable breaking board works

  • The board consists of two halves that lock together along a groove. With a correct strike, the halves separate.
  • Slide the halves back together along the groove, and the board is ready for the next strike.
  • The resistance is the same from strike to strike, unlike wooden boards, which vary from board to board.
  • No splinters and no sharp edges. Corners and edges are rounded.
  • Made of impact-resistant technical polymer, manufactured in the UK.

Safe use

  • Warm up, and practise the technique on a pad or mitts before moving on to the board.
  • Use a breaking board holder, or an experienced holder who holds the board steady by the outer edges, with fingers away from the striking surface.
  • Check that the halves are fully joined before each strike.
  • Do not skip levels. If the board is too hard, technique suffers and the risk of injury increases.

ft-lb (foot-pound) shows how hard you have to strike to break the board: the higher the number, the harder the board. Converted to joules, 12.5 ft-lb is approx. 17 joules, 25 approx. 34 joules, 50 approx. 68 joules and 80 approx. 108 joules. 25 requires twice as much force as 12.5, 50 twice as much as 25, and 80 is 60% harder than 50. Move up one level at a time, when your current board breaks consistently and with good technique.

Questions and answers
