PNP Breaking Board Level 1 – Yellow Pad (12.5 ft-lb)
The lightest board in the PNP series, made for children and beginners breaking their first board. 12.5 ft-lb is a manageable resistance, and the yellow foam pad on the striking surface cushions the impact on hand and foot. The board splits in two with a correct strike and slides back together, so it can be used again and again.
Who is it for?
- Children from age 4, under instructor supervision
- Beginners in taekwondo, karate and other martial arts learning breaking technique
- Clubs that want to give students a safe first break at training, gradings or demonstrations
How hard is it?
12.5 ft-lb is level 1 of 5 in the PNP series, and half the resistance of the 25 boards.
- Choose this if the practitioner is a child, or has never broken a board before.
- Move up to 25 ft-lb with blue pad when the 12.5 board breaks consistently and with good technique.
Why a pad?
The foam pad protects hands and feet during repeated strikes. It makes it easier to commit to striking through, and the student can focus on technique, point of impact and coordination instead of whether it hurts.
How a reusable breaking board works
- The board consists of two halves that lock together along a groove. With a correct strike, the halves separate.
- Slide the halves back together along the groove, and the board is ready for the next strike.
- The resistance is the same from strike to strike, unlike wooden boards, which vary from board to board.
- No splinters and no sharp edges. Corners and edges are rounded.
- Made of impact-resistant technical polymer, manufactured in the UK.
Safe use
- Children should always break under instructor supervision.
- Warm up, and practise the technique on a pad or mitts before moving on to the board.
- Use a breaking board holder, or an experienced holder who holds the board steady by the outer edges, with fingers away from the striking surface.
- Check that the halves are fully joined before each strike.
- Do not skip levels. If the board is too hard, technique suffers and the risk of injury increases.

| 2 | Natural with blue pad | 25 ft-lb | Next step after 12.5: double the resistance, still with a pad |
| 3 | Natural without pad | 25 ft-lb | Intermediate, gradings, and tie-break board in competition |

| 5 | Black | 80 ft-lb | Elite athletes and power breaking. The hardest board in the series |
ft-lb (foot-pound) shows how hard you have to strike to break the board: the higher the number, the harder the board. Converted to joules, 12.5 ft-lb is approx. 17 joules, 25 approx. 34 joules, 50 approx. 68 joules and 80 approx. 108 joules. 25 requires twice as much force as 12.5, 50 twice as much as 25, and 80 is 60% harder than 50. Move up one level at a time, when your current board breaks consistently and with good technique.
Note: Please note that the right of return does not apply to these boards, as they lose quality and function after use.
