PNP Breaking Board Level 5 – Black (80 ft-lb)
The black 80 ft-lb board is the hardest in the PNP series, made for power breaking at elite level. It is for experienced practitioners who have mastered the white 50 board and want to develop explosive striking power and precision further. The board splits in two with a correct strike and slides back together, and withstands repeated hard strikes.
Who is it for?
- Elite athletes and practitioners specialising in power breaking
- Advanced practitioners in taekwondo and karate
- Instructors and demonstration teams
- Not for beginners, and not for children
How hard is it?
80 ft-lb is level 5 of 5, the highest in the PNP series: 60% harder than the white 50 board.
- Choose this if the white 50 ft-lb board breaks consistently and with control, and you want more resistance.
- If you are not there yet: train on the white 50 board first.
- The boards can be stacked in a holder when one board is no longer enough.
Pad?
The black board has no pad. It is 20 mm thick, like the white one, and gives full, firm resistance.
How a reusable breaking board works
- The board consists of two halves that lock together along a groove. With a correct strike, the halves separate.
- Slide the halves back together along the groove, and the board is ready for the next strike.
- The resistance is the same from strike to strike, unlike wooden boards, which vary from board to board.
- No splinters and no sharp edges. Corners and edges are rounded.
- Made of impact-resistant technical polymer, manufactured in the UK.
Safe use
- Warm up, and practise the technique on a pad or mitts before moving on to the board.
- Use a breaking board holder, or an experienced holder who holds the board steady by the outer edges, with fingers away from the striking surface.
- Check that the halves are fully joined before each strike.
- Do not skip levels. If the board is too hard, technique suffers and the risk of injury increases.

Which breaking board should I choose?
| Level | Board | Breaking strength | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Natural with yellow pad | 12.5 ft-lb | Children from age 4 and beginners breaking their first board, under instructor supervision |
| 2 | Natural with blue pad | 25 ft-lb | Next step after 12.5: double the resistance, still with a pad |
| 3 | Natural without pad | 25 ft-lb | Intermediate, gradings, and tie-break board in competition |
| 4 | White | 50 ft-lb | Advanced practitioners. ITF-approved, used for competition and demonstrations |
| 5 | Black | 80 ft-lb | Elite athletes and power breaking. The hardest board in the series |
ft-lb (foot-pound) shows how hard you have to strike to break the board: the higher the number, the harder the board. Converted to joules, 12.5 ft-lb is approx. 17 joules, 25 approx. 34 joules, 50 approx. 68 joules and 80 approx. 108 joules. 25 requires twice as much force as 12.5, 50 twice as much as 25, and 80 is 60% harder than 50. Move up one level at a time, when your current board breaks consistently and with good technique.
Note: Please note that the right of return does not apply to these boards, as they lose quality and function after use.
