Om Boxing for Beginners
Starting boxing? You need less than you think. Here is what actually has to be in place before your first session, so you don't have to guess your way through a range of several hundred products.
What you need first
- Boxing gloves. Your weight determines the ounce size. Most adults start with 12 or 14 oz for training; children and teenagers use 6–10 oz. For bag work only you can go lighter, for sparring heavier.
- Hand wraps. The cheapest equipment you will buy, and the one that saves you from the most injuries. Wraps support the wrist and keep the knuckles in place – use them from your first session, on the bag too.
- Mouthguard. Must be in place before you spar. Most clubs won't let you in without one.
This can wait. You only need a headguard once you start contact work, and boxing shoes come later if you decide to compete. Glove deodoriser isn't necessary, but it is cheap and worth it.
