Om Karate for Beginners
Are you or your child starting karate? The equipment list is shorter than in most other martial arts. The club provides mats and pads, so in practice all you need is the uniform.
What you need before your first session
- Karate gi. A beginner's uniform in lighter cotton works well for the first year and is comfortable to train in. You will usually get a white belt from the club when you start.
- Bag. The uniform needs airing and carrying. A mesh bag or backpack makes it easier to keep your kit organised.
This can wait. Gloves, shin and instep guards and a chest guard only come in once the club introduces kumite, the sparring part. Then WKF-approved equipment applies, and you will know more about what you actually need.
How to choose your size. Karate gis are sized in centimetres and follow your height: if you are 170 cm, choose 170. Cotton shrinks in the wash, so if you are between two sizes, choose the larger one. For growing children it is common to go one size up.
