Sparring Kickboxing
Ready to start sparring? Then the demands on your gear go up. Sparring is about practising technique safely – for yourself and for your training partner – and that takes more padding than bag work does.

Om Sparring Kickboxing
Ready to start sparring? Then the demands on your gear go up. Sparring is about practising technique safely – for yourself and for your training partner – and that takes more padding than bag work does.
Five things you need
- Headguard. An open model gives better vision, a closed one gives more protection around the jaw and cheeks. Ask your coach what the club uses.
- Mouthguard. Shaped in boiling water and moulded to your own teeth. One that doesn't fit doesn't protect.
- Groin guard. Mandatory in competition, and most clubs require it for sparring too.
- Shin and instep guards. Protect both you and your partner. Sparring models are thicker than competition models.
- Well-padded gloves. Go up in ounces from what you use on the bag – the padding is there for your partner's sake.
Everything in this selection is WAKO-approved, so the same gear can also be used in competition. That way you don't have to buy twice.
